Description
I lived in Petaluma California for 5 years in my late 20's and early thirties. The small town in Sonoma County in Northern California was a wonderful place to live. I was married while I lived there and my first child was born there. The house we lived in was a converted chicken coup that was long and narrow. It worked well for the three of us but then my wife became pregnant with my second child and we knew then that there was not going to be enough room for four of us.
Now I live 45 minutes east of Petaluma but I still have good friends in the area and I love to visit. The downtown area is fantastic and you may even recognize it in the movie American Graffiti. This is the quant essential small town America.
Running parallel to main street is the Petaluma River. At one time a very busy river that was a key waterway that allowed barges to move produce from the rural Sonoma County down to the new bustling city of San Francisco. Petaluma ta the time was known as the egg capitol of the river and the barges made daily trips to the city.
The river is still used today but not as frequently and more for the raw materials for the cement plant and for moving grain from the local grain elevator.
I always loved seeing the sunrise on the river on my way to work in the morning so I go back ever now and then to catch the sun come up on the river. I hope you enjoy it also.
